CDC introduces new online interactive system
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) introduces Disability and Health Data System (DHDS). Disability and Health Data System is an online interactive system that helps quickly translate state-level, disability-specific data into information that can be used by state health departments, national disability and health organizations, policymakers, researchers, educators, and others.

New Act Early Ambassadors Selected
Fifteen new Ambassadors selected to develop network of state-level experts and expand the reach of Learn the Signs. Act Early. campaign
 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)/National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD), the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD); and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) are pleased to announce that fifteen new Act Early Ambassadors have been selected from a group of highly qualified applicants, increasing the total number of Act Early Ambassadors to twenty-five. In the coming year, Act Early Ambassadors will work to help promote the "Learn the Signs. Act Early." campaign to improve early identification of autism and other developmental disabilities, promote the "Autism Case Training: A Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics Curriculum," and serve as a liaison with Act Early state teams. The Act Early Ambassador project is a pilot project that launched in June 2011 and will continue through December 2012.

Act Early Ambassador Training and CDC-AUCD Research Grantee Meeting Held
Training for the new cohort of Act Early Ambassadors was held in January, at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) campus in Atlanta, GA. The training provided the Ambassadors with additional information on the Learn the Signs. Act Early. initiative, their responsibilities as an Act Early Ambassador, how to utilize available resources to help promote the Learn the Signs. Act Early. campaign, and opportunities to network with other Ambassadors.
Act Early Ambassadors were later joined by CDC-AUCD research grantees for a meeting that highlighted research related to early intervention and the Learn the Signs. Act Early. campaign. This meeting provided Ambassadors and grantees opportunities to network and discuss Research Topics of Interest (RTOIs) and Collaborative Research Awards (CRAs) that are examining aspects of the campaign. Iowa Department of Public Health
Strategic planning event held to develop goals and objectives for critical health issues
 The Iowa Prevention of Disabilities Policy Council, with staff assistance from the state health department and the University of Iowa Center for Disabilities and Development, recently hosted a state strategic planning event to develop goals and objectives for critical health issues previously identified. Sixty-eight individuals representing state and local public health, health care providers, community service providers and people with disabilities participated. Gloria Krahn, PhD, with the Division of Human Development and Disability at the NCBDDD/CDC, provided an overview of the CDC Roadmap for Improving the Health of People with Disabilities. In addition, Mary Andrus, Assistant Vice-President for Government Relations at Easter Seals USA, provided an update on the implementation of health care reform for people with disabilities, highlighting issues the states must address. Workgroups then addressed these four areas: access to health care (including preventive services), public health infrastructure, community health and wellness and emergency preparedness. A final plan is expected to be ready by June 2012.
Healthcare Access for Persons with Disabilities
Two new web-based courses offered for continuing education
Susan M. Havercamp, Ph.D., Nisonger Center, The Ohio State University, will present two web-based trainings designed for physicians, registered nurses, certified health education specialists, and others who care for persons with disabilities or have an interest in caring for persons with physical, sensory, and developmental disabilities. Part I will provide information about health and healthcare issues for people who have mobility and sensory disabilities. Part II will discuss health issues and barriers to healthcare for people with developmental disabilities. Both courses have been approved for continuing education by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for physicians, nurses, certified health education specialists and other health professionals.
AUCD Staffing Update
 Join us in welcoming our newest team member, Tory Christensen. Tory is now a Senior Project Specialist on the AUCD-NCBDDD Cooperative Agreement!
Tory recently relocated to Washington, DC from Iowa City, IA. She has a bachelor's degree in Speech and Hearing Science, a master's degree in Social Work, and is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. While in Iowa, Tory spent almost nine years working at the University of Iowa's Center for Disabilities and Development, which is designated as Iowa's UCEDD. A great portion of her time was spent working as a behavior analyst during her employment there. She was also a LEND trainee while at the University of Iowa. Tory is excited to be joining the CDC team!
